MARC BROUSSARD APPEARS LIVE AT ST PANCRAS OLD CHURCH (EUSTON ROAD, CAMDEN TOWN, NW1 1UH) ON JULY 11TH AND RELEASES 'A LIFE WORTH LIVIN' -JULY 29TH

In 2004, Marc Broussard released his major-label debut entitled Carencro, after the Louisiana town where he was born and raised, and its thematic centerpiece was a hickory-smoked slab of Bayou soul called “Home.” That album and the three that followed revealed Broussard as an old-school Southern soul singer blessed with a rarefied gift and innate stylistic and emotional authenticity. Now, a decade after his critical breakthrough, Broussard has come full circle with A LIFE WORTH LIVING, his sixth studio album - that celebrates what home means to him: from his family, community, relationships to all the minutiae of everyday life that he has come to treasure.

From the charged metaphor of the opening track, “Hurricane Heart”, to the closing existential lament, “I’ll Never Know,” A LIFE WORTH LIVING takes the listener into a song cycle that brings those traditional American values to vivid life, a series of ballads and deep-gut soul-rockers with revealing titles like “Edge of Heaven,” “Another Day,” “Weight of the World,” “Perfect to Me” and “Shine.” These songs, some intimate and others churning with intensity, like the kickass blues-rockers “Dyin’ Man” and “Man Ain’t Supposed to Cry,” chart the full range of concerns and emotions of a man as he experiences the joys and sorrows of existence. With A LIFE WORTH LIVING Broussard gets really close to the bone and that’s particularly revealing on the title track, a poignant story of the passing of his grandmother.

“The lion’s share of the material on this record is extremely personal.” Broussard says. “There are decades of stories behind a single line in any of these songs. Whether it’s because I’m older and a little more perceptive, or whether it was just the right time, I find myself with a set of songs that really means the world to me. In that way alone, it’s vastly different than anything I’ve done before.”

A LIFE WORTH LIVING will be made available from July 29th and marks Broussard’s return to Vanguard Records,- Vanguard having released 2007’s SOS: Save Our Soul, his scintillating album of covers of Southern soul classics.

Daniel Sturridge joins FootballAlbum

FootballAlbum has just launched on iOS and Android in the UK, Spain, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina with a fun and vibrant ‘Brazil Edition’. This week one of the most exciting members of England’s World Cup 2014 squad, Daniel Sturridge joins FootballAlbum.

“FootballAlbum’s outlook is aligned to mine - getting the most enjoyment out of football and loving the banter on and off the pitch. What’s not to like? Fun stickers of your mates, cracking live stats and football news 24-7.” Comments Daniel Sturridge.

Using a much loved sticker album concept, users create their fun football sticker, then collect their friends to enjoy their football conversations alongside free, best in class stats (from Opta Sports) and live football news. Or as Daniel describes “It’s what you’d get if you crossed a football sticker album with amazing football stats and WhatsApp.”

FootballAlbum’s ‘Brazil Edition’, created by a London based startup launched at the beginning of June, 2014. One of the app’s key features is a fun sticker creation process, which allows users to select their international team, then ‘FAN-UP’ for their country by choosing from a variety of stickers and supporter accessories.

The FootballAlbum app is closed network social media platform just for football, and just for friends. “We’ve always believed that friends opinions matter more - because it’s here, between groups of friends, where the creativity and fun happens... and strangely, fun seems to be a forgotten ingredient in this app category”, explains Ben Copley the Co-founder & CPO.

Once ‘stuck in’ they ‘collect’ their friends’ stickers, who are grouped by the team they support and access live stats (from Opta Sports) & new stories, blended in with their own chat in the Live screen.

“It means you carry your football world with you. Then when the football kicks- off it explodes into life as live football stats, goals, news and your mates banter all happen in one place”

Everything on FootballAlbum is free. “It’s crucial our users get the core product for free. We’ll later offer enhancements via in app purchases, but the ability to collect your friends, get best-in-class football data along-side your own conversations is at heart of the concept.” Ben adds.

FootballAlbum ‘The Brazil Edition’ has launched now in the UK, Spain, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina. “We are looking to LatAm as we had huge interest and previous success in this region. It makes a lot of sense to establish ourselves in these areas of phenomenal social media, smartphone, and app growth...and they know a thing or too about football!” Ben concluded.

FootballAlbum is the new home for football friends. Download the free app to enjoy all your football chat, stats and news with your friends. It is available for iOS and Android devices now.

FAT LES TO SAVE THE WORLD CUP AND RELEASE "WHO INVENTED FISH AND CHIPS" & FEATURING LILY ALLEN

Fat Les, the million-selling event-led, anarchic pop art collective (oh yes) fronted by maverick actor/comedian Keith Allen, have announced that they are to release a 2014 World Cup song called "Who Invented Fish & Chips." The news comes hot on the heels of the revelation that Gary Barlow's officially-endorsed but dreadful World Cup ditty 'Greatest Day' has been pulled for reasons unknown.
The lyrics to "Who Invented Fish and Chips" run thusly -
"Who invented Fish? (God)
Who invented Chips? (God did too)
Who invented Fish & Chips? (The English did)
Well who invented poo? (The Dutch) (No)"

- though the true beauty of the song surely lies in the spoken bridge:
"50% of the inventions inverted after the second world war have been English. Trains, Boats, Planes, Computers, Penicillin, Connect Four, Countdown, Generation Game, Telephones, Parliament, National Health, Luddites, Bessemer Converter, Spinning Jenny, Steam, Internal Combustion, Hovercraft, The Clash, Blur, Oasis, Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Capstan Full Strength, Navy Rum, Hipsters, Hippies, Flares, Vera Lynn and Chris Kamara."

I tell you we've already had that Michael Gove on the phone wanting them for the school syllabus.
Fat Les sold more than a million copies of their World Cup song Vindaloo in 1998. The record has become something of a cause celebre for afficianados of that much-maligned genre - the football-inspired anthem - although Keith Allen has previous in this regard, having penned the lyrics to New Order's celebrated only No.1 single, 'World In Motion' in 1990. Having said that, Allen almost usurped this with the release of the Official FA-endorsed EURO 2000 song 'Jerusalem', subsequently releasing a video that included cameos from Fat Les luminaries Wayne Sleep, Michael Barrymore, Alex James and a cast of thousands - all topped off with footage of Allen flying over some unspecific hinterland in a spitfire. Interestingly, the Spitfire footage was originally questioned by the FA until Allen photo-shopped the aircraft pink! And indeed there's the rub: Fat Les videos are unrivalled: Vindaloo featured Paul Kaye's pastiche of the Verve's Richard Ashcroft amidst the chaos that included Allen, Damien Hirst, Alex James and the virtually unknown Matt Lucas and David Walliams.

"Who Invented Fish & Chips" was actually released in 2002 - with a cover designed by Damien Hirst, fact fiends and features Lily Allen and dad Keith on vocals and Blur's Dave Rowntree on drums. The video features Lily Allen, Keith Allen, Game Of Thrones star Alfie Allen, Wayne Sleep and Chris Kamara and can be seen here

"Who Invented Fish & Chips" is available now at £0.99 on i-Tunes but at this stage there is no truth in the rumour that all proceeds from the sale of the record will be going towards a tax avoidance scheme.

JOSEPH ARTHUR RELEASES "LOU" THE SONGS OF LOU REED ON JUNE 2ND, 2014

"It's odd dancing around death, odder still if the death you are dancing around is that of a legend. You just never know what's appropriate and what's not, what to share and what to keep inside. There is no blueprint. I loved Lou and we were friends. The last thing I would want to do is turn his life into an opportunity, but at the same time, what better way to honour the man and his music than to celebrate it and sing it and record it?" Joseph Arthur

"Lou" was performed, recorded and produced by Joseph Arthur in his home studio and will be released on June 2nd, 2014 on Vanguard Records.

Arthur will be performing live in the UK at London Dingwalls on 29th May 2014.

The 45s play Upstairs At The Garage on Tuesday 15th April 2014

The 45s

Currently one of the hottest bands in the UK, The 45s bring their R & B glamour to London next week when they appear live Upstairs at The Garage (Highbury Crescent) on Tuesday 15th April 2014. Now 16 and 17 years old, in the 18 months since forming at school in Carlisle, The 45s - who consist of Tom Hamilton-Hughes (lead guitarist/vocalist) James Green (singer, harmonica), Joe Wyatt (bass) and Bailey Claringbold (drums) - have made a name for themselves outside their native north west winning the seal of approval from Feelgoods' legend Wilko Johnson. As well as Dr Feelgood The 45s take their musical cues from mod gods the Small Faces and The Who with punk thrown in. Tom says: "I prefer R & B because it's got a lot of feel and groove to it and I can identify with it, it's very honest because there's very few overdubs."

The 45s are purveyors of unashamedly raw R & B from a bygone age from their retro suits, mod hairdos and Hofner and Gretsch guitars. Classic Rock says: "With an intensity reminiscent of the Feelgoods or the Pretty Things at their peak, it's easy to see why Wilko Johnson is name-checking The 45s in interviews and they finish their 20 strong set with a blistering take on Going Back Home. In the battle for teenage R&B supremacy The Strypes have led the charge up until now but the 45s are snapping and snarling at their heels and catching up fast."

The Blues Magazine says: "Imported from Carlisle and adopted as extended family by Canvey's flat-landers The 45s could be The Yardbirds illegitimate kiddies, solid as a Sta-Prest crease, their short, sharp slams of maximum R'n'B and guitar gymnastics capture the club-quaking clout of Keith Relf and co at The Crawdaddy or Flamingo."

BIG PILOT - DANIEL MAYS READS "LAST OF THE GREAT PRETENDERS" MARCH 2014

Daniel Mays is the latest leading actor recruited by Big Pilot to read their “atmospheric and clever science fiction” (Starburst) audio/music books - 'The Car Club.' Mays (Made In Dagenham, Atonement, The Winterling) was last seen as Ronnie Biggs in Mrs Biggs and has just competed his performances as Sydney Potts in the jaw-droppingly brilliant rock ‘n’ roll thriller MOJO at The Harold Pinter Theatre. Mays reads “The Car Club”, a freshly-penned lost-future short story about our dysfunctional relationship with technology and how our protections of others can be more about our own needs.
Big Pilot are a duo already giving the humble audio book a kick up the arse. Combining the talents of writer James Hitchins and musician Alvin Spetz, the duo create original novelettes with illustrations by way of short songs, narrated by the finest British Actors.

In a parallel life, Hitchins is a double bassist with an MA in Philosophy and a Great Uncle who worked for the European Space Agency and the Apollo Program whilst Spetz fronts Full English Breakfast whose satirical indie musings have been gathering plaudits since 2009: the Guardian described their eponymous debut album as “genuinely esoteric and obscure," the Sunday Times suggested it was “seriously good” and pulled together “the sound of the Fall, Edwyn Collins, Devo and Wire” and Uncut claimed it was "a highly eccentric but thoroughly engaging electronic/art-pop debut that aligns him with The Fall, Denim and Frank Zappa."

BIG PILOT’s first release was Gravity Pulls Through, a nihilistic sci fi short story penned by Hitchins and narrated by the legendary actor Keith Allen. The piece was commissioned by Spetz with the unreasonable demand that the story should contain references (in no particular order) to a tub of Pluko (hair grease), the stock exchange, Stafford Beer (cybernetics expert), Henry Kissinger, Roy Hattersley and an old carpet, these being the lyrical content of the songs already in the bag for a half-finished album. The results were exemplary and Allen’s monotone delivery complemented them perfectly.
BIG PILOT’s very existence is an answer to the question: Haven’t all of us found ourselves in the middle of reading a gripping novel but fancied a song break? Naturally, having now removed the need to press pause and play, the duo have taken their philosophy to its natural conclusion and now subtly encode some of the story’s content into the music itself – and this is a philosophy due to extend to all future audio/music books read by the greatest British actors.
The Car Club was written by James Hitchins, narrated by Daniel Mays and the music was provided by Alvin Spetz. It is due to be made available via iTunes in March 2014.

‘Last of the Great Pretenders’, was produced by Nathanson, Mike Viola and Jake Sinclair, and features gems such as “Mission Bells” which Nathanson describes as “a love story via a street fight,” against a San Francisco backdrop; incidentally, the picturesque city by the Bay serves as the locale for several songs on the new album. The Hitchcock inspired video for “Mission Bells” pays homage to the master of suspense’s various films whilst yet another video - for the song ‘Kinks Shirt’ - was directed by comedian Bobcat Goldthwait and was filmed in various places in Los Angeles, including the strip club Cheetah’s. The full track listing for the album runs as follows:
Earthquake Weather; Mission Bells; Last days Of Summer In San Francisco; Kinks Shirt; Sky High Honey; Annie’s Always Waiting (For The Next One To Leave); Kill The Lights; Heart Starts; Birthday Girl; Sunday New York Times; Farewell, December.
About Matt Nathanson:

Based in San Francisco, Matt Nathanson has evolved into one of the premier songwriters and dynamic performers on the music scene today. His 2007 album Some Mad Hope (his first for Vanguard) yielded the smash single “Come on Get Higher,” which has sold more than two million copies to date, as well as the subsequent hits “Car Crash,” “Falling Apart” and “All We Are.” The success of Some Mad Hope earned Nathanson appearances on TV shows such as David Letterman, Ellen, Conan O’Brien, Leno, Jimmy Kimmel and many others. Additionally, his songs have been featured in numerous film and TV programs, including Good Morning America, NCIS, Private Practice, American Idol, X Factor, Vampire Diaries, American Pie and 90210. Modern Love, his previous studio album, debuted at#17 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart, topped the iTunes Pop Chart and featured the hit singles “Faster” and “Run” – the latter featuring Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush. Nathanson is a legendary live performer, and the forthcoming March appearances in the UK are a rare chance to catch his uniquely chic comedic flair.

Mojn Secures $4 Million Funding to Accelerate Growth

Global expansion in 2013 saw opening of office in London

3 February, 2014 - London – Copenhagen – Mojn, an innovator in real time retargeted emails, today announced that it has raised USD 4 million in Series A financing. This comes following the launch of its unique email retargeting solution for e-commerce businesses. The funds will be used for continued global expansion following the recent opening of a new office in London.

The USD 4 million deal round was led by Northzone in Copenhagen and London with participation from Notion Capital in London and Zoar Invest in Copenhagen. Northzone was an early investor in TrustPilot, Spotify, Avito and Lastminute.com.

While email as a marketing vehicle for e-commerce companies is driving significant revenue generation, email marketing has not been retargeted on a broad scale even though the performance increase is significant and proven. That is now changing rapidly as Mojn has overcome the technological barriers to create customized emails to eCommerce businesses’ webpage visitors in real time. The solution is cloud-based, simple to implement and fully scalable.

Commenting on the deal, Northzone Ventures’ general partner Gregers Kronborg said, “Northzone is excited to be leading this investment and to be supporting Mojn and its impressive team as they set out to define email retargeting. We see strong potential for Mojn to become the global category winner of performance email targeting.”

Mojn now provides its international customer base with automated banner ad retargeting as well as the novel, yet already proven, email retargeting solutions. Mojn’s business customers include:
Kuoni/Apollo, SmartKids, Momondo and Hifi-Klubben.

Carsten Hyldahl, Mojn co-founder, comments; “We are moving into big revenue streams with a unique system that merges advertising, device mapping and marketing. We’ve gathered a set of truly outstanding individuals and personalities - ranging from Ph.D.’s to serial entrepreneurs - and I'm excited by the prospect of being part of a game-changing team."

Founder, Thomas Jensen adds: “Our journey started in 2009 just as the financial crisis took off. So what do you do when you have a fantastic idea - and no money? In our case the help came from Inger Rosenkilde (owner of IMR Holding) who supplied USD 3 million in seed capital during a period of 5 years. Inger is an emotionally engaged investor whose beliefs, ethics and moral code inform her investment decisions - and this felt appropriate since Mojn is a company with a lot of heart. The wonderful people at Notion Capital and NorthZone are also now on board and we can complete our UK expansion and become a noticeable threat to the range of incumbents with antiquated tech and market models. Our first product - Performance Email Targeting - is delivering unparalleled results for our clients but there's a lot more to come. Indeed, our goal is to push the envelope even further until we’ve made a major impact on the society that surrounds us."

Stephen Chandler, managing partner at Notion Capital, comments; “Less than 5% of email marketing is personalised. Mojn makes it easy to deliver relevant and personalized marketing content to all website visitors and with the results this delivers, we believe they have the potential to build a very big business.".

AGGRO SANTOS releases 'LOVE LIKE THIS' on FOD Records in September 2013.

The Brazilian/Anglo rap star Aggro Santos releases his new single ‘Love Like This’ on FOD Records in September 2013. The high tempo track has been produced by world-renowned producer Lu Diaz (PitBull, Flo Rida etc) and will be made available along with several remixes via Supasound, 7th Heaven and Cosmic Dawn. The video for ‘Love Like This’ is directed by David Rousseau, currently the world’s most successful video director and the man responsible for videos by PitBull (featuring artists such as Christina Aguilera, Marc Antony and Shakira), Enrique Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez (featuring PitBull) and Lil Wayne – videos which are approaching 3 billion views worldwide.

‘Love Like This’ comes hot on the heels of Santos’ previous successes with ‘Candy’ (which featured Kimberley Wyatt and sold more than 200,000 copies in the UK alone), ‘Saint or Sinner’ and ‘Like U Like’ which featured ex-Girls Aloud member Kimberley Walsh.

Aggro Santos is the real musical deal. Sao Paulo born and South London bred, the 23 year old has been surrounded by beats and rhythm his entire life. Although his music switches uncompromisingly from the pulsating sound of samba to the 2-step of UK Garage, Aggro first fell in love with making music at the age of eight after buying Carlos Santana’s ‘Supernatural’ and mastering the tablature he found on the internet. He then graduated to Jimi Hendrix and taught himself to play drums, guitar and keyboards before auditioning for the BRIT School at the age of fourteen where he played drums for a classmate called Adele. He subsequently chose the name Aggro as he was determined to aggressively make moves in the music business, left the BRIT school, and by the age of 18, he was already a star on Channel U and MTV Base, playing shows all over the UK and selling thousands of copies of his self-financed and distributed mix-tape. One of these ‘Free Yard’ shot to No.1 on Channel U (now AKA) where it stayed for an amazing 18 weeks throughout 2008. The song has now had 600,000 plays on You Tube. In 2010 Aggro Santos was nominated for an Urban Music Award.

PREFAB SPROUT: THE COMEBACK!

The exemplary, nay legendary, Prefab Sprout, release their first album of new material for thirteen years in October 2013. The album is to be titled ‘Crimson/Red’ and will be released on October 7th on Icebreaker Records. ‘Crimson/Red’ has been written and recorded over the past eighteen months and is being hailed as the best Prefab Sprout material since the band’s seminal ‘Jordan: The Comeback’ album way back in 1990. The track listing for the album runs as follows: The Best Jewel Thief In The World; The List Of Impossible Things; Adolescence; Grief Built The Taj Mahal; Devil Came A Calling; Billy; The Dreamer; The Songs Of Danny Galway; The Old Magician; Mysterious.

The last official release by Prefab Sprout, ‘Let’s Change The World With Music’, appeared in 2009 – although the fact that that record had largely been conceived and written some years earlier makes the release of ‘Crimson/Red’ all the more poignant. Prior to that of course, Prefab Sprout – who, for much of their existence, comprised Paddy McAloon, Martin McAloon, Wendy Smith and Neil Conti - sprung to fame with the release of ‘Swoon’ (1984), followed by ‘Steve McQueen’ (1985), ‘From Langley Park To Memphis’ (1988) and ‘Jordan: The Comeback’ (1990), albums which cast Paddy McAloon as “a Cole Porter or Stephen Sondheim for the Morrissey years.”

The band achieved Top 40 success with eight of their albums and their hits include ‘When Love Breaks Down’, ‘Cars And Girls’ and 'The King Of Rock ’n’ Roll.’

‘Crimson/Red’ was conceived and written by McAloon himself who plays all the instruments on the record. Subjects tackled on the album include Bob Dylan (‘Mysterious’), a fondly recalled meeting between Paddy and Jimmy Webb in 1991 (‘The Songs Of Danny Galway’), the arrogance of writing for a living (‘The Best Jewel Thief In The World’), and possibly even Paddy himself (‘The Old Magician’).

MIKE MARLIN - 'GRAND REVEAL' - MAY TOUR 2013

Mike Marlin, whose new album 'Grand Reveal" has been receiving some extraordinarily good reviews and will be appearing live on tour on the following dates::

7TH MAY         ABERDEEN THE LEMON TREE
8TH MAY         EDINBURGH THE LIQUID ROOM
10TH MAY       GLASGOW 02 ABC
11TH MAY       NEWCASTLE 02 ACADEMY
13TH MAY       MANCHESTER ACADEMY
14TH MAY       NOTTINGHAM RESCUE ROOMS
16TH MAY       NORWICH WATERFRONT
17TH MAY       WOLVERHAMPTON LITTLE CIVIC
18TH MAY       HULL THE WELLY CLUB
20TH MAY       CARDIFF THE GLOBE
21ST MAY        BRIGHTON CONCORDE 2
22ND MAY       SOUTHAMPTON THE BROOK
24TH MAY       LONDON CLAPHAM GRAND

Mike Marlin was born in London in the early sixties and brought up in suburbia. When he was four years old he lost an eye while playing in the garden at home. He became something of a child prodigy and at the age of seventeen won a scholarship to Oxford to study Physics. Following a breakdown and family meltdown Mike set up his own technology company and then started a series of businesses that rewrote the rules on technology in markets before becoming a novelist and singer/songwriter. He released an album called “Nearly Man” that he describes as “the greatest hits of a man who never had any hits” and then “Man On The Ground” an album he recorded with Catherine Marks, a producer who spent the last seven years working with acclaimed sound-smiths Alan Moulder and Flood.
Produced by Mike and mixed by Catherine, ‘Grand Reveal’ is a record of shattering depth and substance and has the feel of an instant classic, like something you have had knocking around the house for years.
Mike suggests that the album could be seen as a progression from someone who is happy and in love to someone who is truly murderous – the serial killing track ‘Skull Beneath The Skin’ suggests as much. His haunting, addictive vocal delivery is utterly un-contrived, reminiscent of Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed in their more revealing moments and yet, occasionally, we are transported to a world where Wilco is fronted by Richard Butler or David Bowie. However, it is as a story-teller that Marlin really excels. Upsetting all the right apple carts and as bright, heretical and unusual as any artist these shores have produced this century. His voice is substantial enough to hang your washing on and so dark, brooding and intense you feel that when he sings you are holding something close to your heart like a wounded bird. He’s enigmatic, yes – and believes in “making cathedrals out of matchsticks with no external point of reference”. The last song ‘To The Grave’ sums this up: Mike intones in apocalyptical mantra “Did you learn to wait?” and you know that it is a true story. Like everything on Grand Reveal – it is heartbreaking, true and utterly authentic.

THE VICAR SONGBOOK - TUESDAY 30TH APRIL 2.30 PM AT DOLBY HQ, 4-6 SOHO SQUARE, W1 - RSVP

The Vicar is a legendary music producer, a semi-fictional British eccentric whose life and career is due to be celebrated in a groundbreaking multi-media project that offers a unique expose of the madness of the music industry. His exploits are documented in an ingenious series of whodunnits available as novels, graphic novels, videoblogs and audio books whilst June 1st sees the release of The Vicar Songbook No.1, a chamber pop opus produced by The Vicar himself - showcasing his unique string and chamber arrangements - and featuring some of the world’s outstanding musicians: Cathy Stevens (Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Everything but the Girl), Tony Levin (John Lennon, Paul Simon, King Crimson), Theo Travis (Gong, Soft Machine Legacy, Steven Wilson Band), Steve Sidwell (Robbie Williams, George Michael), Chas Dickie (Van der Graaf Generator, PJ Harvey), Karen Wimhurst (Zaum, English National Opera), Nigel Barr (Michael Nyman Band), Horacio Pozzo (Argentine BigTime Guitar Trio) as well as some extraordinary vocalists, new and old, like Steve Porter, Paul Ibberson & Mutch Katsonga, Mercury Prize nominee Tim Elsenburg, Andy Yorke, Lewis Taylor & David Scott.

The Vicar Songbook No.1 is being made available in hi-res stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound. Dolby Laboratories have chosen this album as the perfect surround-sound showcase, and to celebrate this unique release, they are hosting a thirty minute playback at the state-of-the-art Ray Dolby Theatre at Dolby HQ 4-6 Soho Square on 30th April at 2.30pm.

About The Vicar: The Vicar is a campaigner for artist rights and scourge of the evil empire of the record industry, both fictionally (in the stories) and in reality, such as the recent Fart For Your Rights campaign against UMG. He has “existed” as an artist for about ten years blogging on www.dgmlive.com (where the Vicar Chronicles themselves first appeared as part of an online blog). He may or may not have connections to record producer, songwriter, author, online pioneer and label owner David Singleton, an early music pioneer of music DVDs, co-founder of Bootleg TV, current co-owner of DGM with Robert Fripp, and known for his work with artists as diverse as The Amsterdam Metropole Orchestra, Bill Bruford, The California Guitar Trio, Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, the lutenist Jacob Heringman, David Sylvian, John Paul Jones, King Crimson, Bill Nelson, Opus 20 and The Orb.

Tony Mortimer releases his debut solo single "Shake It Down" on FOD Records in June 2013.

Tony Mortimer has confirmed that the first single to be released from his debut solo album will be called Shake It Down. The up-tempo Motown-tinged affair features Mortimer’s decidedly dulcet tones alighting upon the delightful subject of, ahem, dirty dancing and is the first fruits of Mortimer’s solo long player Songs From The Suitcase due for release on FOD Records.

Both the single and album were produced by the legendary Bob Rose at ICP Studios in Brussels and are mooted for release in June 2013.

Tony Mortimer signed to FOD Records in 2012 and his debut album Songs From The Suitcase - incidentally the title comes from the fact that Mortimer carries around hundreds of his songs in a suitcase – focuses on subjects like long-term relationships and growing old and is are as far removed from teen pop as it’s possible to convene.

Indeed, with songs like Out Of The Frame (in which Mortimer appears to rally against his public image as a teenage rapper in a boy band), the instantly memorable Rain In England, a co-write with Julian Lennon, XTC’s Andy Partridge and Marius De Vries and a duet with Julian himself, Hold On, a song about someone falling out of love with you and all the heartbreak that ensues, and End Of The Line, a sparse ballad not un-reminiscent of Sinead O’Connor’s version of Nothing Compares 2 U, Mortimer has seemingly rewritten the rulebook on his career.

YOUTH AND KOVAK AT CLUB KOVAK (BLIND TIGER, BRIGHTON) ON MARCH 2ND 2013

Killing Joke co-founder and acclaimed record producer Youth, whose exemplary credentials include the likes of Dido, Paul McCartney, U2, The Verve, Crowded House and The Orb, will make a special appearance on the decks at Brighton’s Club KOVAK at The Blind Tiger Club on Saturday 2nd March. This night of both live music and DJ performance will feature the long-awaited return of KOVAK, the electronic-pop/rock outfit and one of Brighton’s most acclaimed acts, recently described in The Times as “on the verge of making it big”. KOVAK will be debuting new material from their forthcoming album, Modern Lovers, which has already received significant support from Radio 2 and the print press.

The band have been running the popular Club KOVAK for over six years in various Brighton venues and are now taking the night to the curators of the Playgroup Festivals’ venue, The Blind Tiger Club. The band’s renowned club night’s ingredients are superb live acts, including KOVAK themselves, and “name” DJs to keep the audience dancing ‘til the wee hours. Previous Club KOVAKs have featured sets from Mercury Music Prize nominees The Go! Team and Alex Paterson of ambient / electronic duo, The Orb. This time round, at the band’s first club night for nearly two years, the audience can lap up live sounds from a hotly tipped supporting act and KOVAK themselves. The night will conclude with the aforementioned and doubtless spectacular DJ set from producer and Killing Joke bassist, Youth.

KOVAK lead singer Annelies Van de Velde says: “We’re really very excited to have such a big name headline this Club KOVAK night. We’ve gradually watched the night grow and it’s lovely to choose such an intimate and bohemian venue this time round.”

ME ANNOUNCE MARCH UK TOUR

Australian four-piece ME open the main stage at Australia's Big Day Out Festival in January 2013 and return to the UK in March for a headline tour. March 3rd - The Leopard, Doncaster; March 4th - The Duchess, York; March 5th - Barfly, London; March 6th - King Tuts, Glasgow; March 7th - Think Tank, Newcastle; March 8th - Dry Bar, Manchester; March 11th - Kasbah, Coventry.

Australian four-piece ME will be releasing their debut album ‘Even The Odd Ones Out’ on Lizard King Records on 4th March 2013. The theatrical rockers have been causing a big fuss in the UK live circuit having played over a hundred shows already in 2012 and touring with the likes of Kasabian, Twin Atlantic and Panic! at the Disco, the latter tour seeing them play to 30,000 people in ten days. Since April ME have appeared on the bill of London’s legendary Camden Crawl and Brighton’s Great Escape Festival and have completed three more successful UK tours with King Charles, The Xcerts and Motion City Soundtrack, as well as a packed London headline show at The Sebright Arms.

The record opens with the twisted nursery crime theatrics of Hoo Ha ("Mirror, mirror, on the wall, a vain bunch aren't we all"), the band’s live opener and a track that really does set the tone of this epic, rock opera of an album. Vampire!! Vampire!! is less a homage to Twilight and more a straight up, three-minute head rush about the band’s hatred of reality television culture and specifically its creators. “Do yourself a favour, turn the television off, read a book or go support local live music”, offers Luke. Rock and Roll Dandy is a ridiculously catchy homage to past musical glories (or ‘like Suede gone to Download’ according to Q Magazine), steam punk magnum opus and live highlight Westward Backwards is the band s perfect calling card and Trails in the Sky a slice of magnificent orchestral hugeness that hints at the band s stadium filling ambitions.

The album has been produced by ‘Barny’ Barnicott (Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys, Temper Trap) and Grammy winning engineer Ian Dowling and the full track listing runs as follows: Hoo Ha; Trails In The Sky; Rock and Roll Dandy; Like A Fox; Westward Backwards; Carousel; Working Life; Under The Sun; Vampire!! Vampire!!; Choral; Your Favourite Colour; Their Song.

“ME look set to make a big splash…they sound huge, dramatic and unutterably exciting” Kerrang!

DEEP FOREST RELEASE DEEP AFRICA ON MARCH 4TH 2013.

Deep Forest, the brainchild of French musician Eric Mouquet, has announced details of their new album set for release on March 4th 2013. The Grammy Award winning world music outfit - sometimes described as an ethnic electronica collective - have sold over ten million albums to date and the new album is a return to Mouquet’s first musical influences, i.e. Africa.

Mouquet says: “The songs within this project are all collaborations with amazing African artists. I wanted to work openly in the studio and no song was composed before the session. All the music came during the time we spent together. This creative process gave songs with different atmospheres, from electro world, reggae to acoustic ballads. I was looking for a warm and wild sound for Deep Africa and the mix between vintage synthesizers, vocals and real African instruments and percussions produced the musical touch I wanted.”

Deep Africa features contributions from South African chanteuse Zama Magadulela, Congolesian singer Lokua Kanza, Cameroon soul singer Blick Bassy, Senegalese vocalist and musician Wasis Diop (reknowned for blending traditional Senegalese folk music with modern pop and jazz), Ivory Coast musician Olyza, Congo-born Lokua Kanza (who traditionally sings in French, Swahili, Lingala, Portuguese, and English), Cameroonian vocalist Dany de Mouataba, Senegalese bassist and singer Alune Wade, Senegalese-French drummer and producer David Fall and Malian guitarist Guimba Kouiate.

Deep Forest have a rich film pedigree having collaborated on film soundtracks and provided material for Robert Altman’s Pret A Porter, the 1995 movie Strange Days, the film version of The Island Of Dr Moreau, the French film Pacifique and the Japanese film Kusa No Ran. The outfit sprung to fame, however, in 1994 with the release of their dance-driven self-titled debut album which received a Grammy Award nomination for Best World Music Album.

Deep Forest release Deep Africa on March 4th 2013.

KOVAK RELEASE KILLER KILLER BOOTS

Ostensibly Britain’s answer to the Scissor Sisters, Kovak are also (as of this week) now only the second unsigned band to be play-listed on BBC Radio 2. The song, Killer Boots, which has received that accolade, is a gorgeous slice of vintage electro-pop that takes you back to the days when analogue synths were analogue synths and guitars were just a pipe dream.

Kovak are fronted by the enigmatic blonde chanteuse Annelies Van de Velde whilst the four-piece also comprises brothers Karl Bray (guitars), Darren Bray (drums) and Martin White (keyboards). The band hail from Brighton where they run the successful electro-dance night Club Kovak although you’re just as likely to find them recording their new album at Arreton Manor - a haunted 15th century house on the Isle of Wight - with acclaimed producer Andy Gray, responsible for records by Hard Fi, Paul Oakenfold, Gary Numan and Enter Shikari. The album is being mixed by Steve Brown, famed for his production work on The Cult’s She Sells Sanctuary and Wham’s Young Guns and Club Tropicana. And what a combination that is!

Given the band’s impeccable credentials it comes as no surprise to learn that KOVAK had over 30000 hits for the video for their last single ‘I’ll Be Good To You.’ The new video features the band wearing clothes by the extremely relevant and acclaimed Brighton designer Gresham Blake, the man responsible for dressing Fatboy, Ray Winstone, Chris Evans and Led Zeppelin (at the 02) in recent years.

Killer Boots is available now via iTunes.

The song can be heard here: soundcloud.com/officialkovak/killer-boots

GREGORY DARLING RELEASES RIDE OF MY LIFE ON FOD RECORDS IN JULY 2012

‘Ride Of My Life’ is so instantly memorable it suggests that Gregory Darling is wired into some illegal song-writing machine. And when Darling sings “I’m gonna take the ride of my life/Take my mind up to the sky” you know he is emoting with some kind of authority. Back when popular music was a tangible threat to the establishment, Darling notoriously turned down countless record deals (£1.5 million from EMI/SBK and even more lucrative offers from A & M, RCA and Capitol Records) and ‘Ride Of My Life’ surely documents this synopsis and yet proves something else: a pure blast of classic, euphoric popular music is what the world’s been waiting for.

Of course, Gregory Darling is an enigma. Famed for appearing in a choir conducted as a child by Ennio Morricone (Exorcist 2) and counting his diminutive godliness Prince amongst his die-hard following, Darling initially signed to Polygram as Darling Cruel and shifted 100,000 copies of his debut album Passion Crimes in its first week of release. Years later after a lengthy spell as Julian Lennon’s co-writer and two successful albums for FOD Records (Shell and Stew Americano), Darling has now found a new lease of life and it’s this optimism that makes new album ‘Coloured Life’ sound so young and full of beans; ‘Dirty Little Secrets’ is about setting the record straight before you fly headlong into a relationship; ‘The Invitation’ is the story of a rich Monaco heiress who offered Darling “the keys to the city.” ‘Monkey Love’ was inspired by an eye-opening trip to the zoo and is good enough to be in Jungle Book; and best of all is ‘With Or Without This Song’ which is probably the least cynical and most self-effacing tune you’re likely to hear this side of the millennium.

Produced by Bob Rose and recorded and mixed in Brussels and Rome, ‘Ride Of My Life’ (and indeed ‘Coloured Life’) is like Adele or Amy Winehouse reimagined by Elvis Costello and has an instant, classic feel, like something you’ve had knocking around the house for years. More than this though, ‘Coloured Life’ turns out to be a revelation: it’s the sound of someone hitting the ground running.

Gregory Darling releases ‘Ride Of My Life’ on FOD Records in July 2012. The album ‘Coloured Life’ is scheduled for release in August 2012.

ME headline MUSIC WEEK BREAKOUT bill at Camden Proud Galleries on June 13th

Already heralded by Kerrang! magazine as “essentially Queen if every single member was Freddie Mercury”, everyone's favourite ungooglable band ME, are set to headline the MUSIC WEEK BREAKOUT bill at Camden's Proud Gallery on June 13th 2012.
The band's debut mini-album Another Story High is currently available via i-Tunes whilst the band's next single – the impossibly good steam punk epic Westward Backwards - is due out on May 28th.
ME are Luke Ferris (voice, guitar, piano), Damian Tapley (guitar, voice), Michael Godde (bass, voice) and Spike Rogers (drums, programming). The band formed in 2009 in Melbourne, Australia although, Australia being Australia, only drummer Spike is from Melbourne itself whereas Damien hails from Perth and Mikey scooted down from the snowy peaks of Mount Beauty.
ME have spent the last six months supporting Kasabian, Evanescence and Death From Above 1979 as well as touring with Panic! At The Disco and Twin Atlantic and recording with renowned producer Simon ‘Barny’ Barnicott (Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys, Temper Trap). The results of the latter excursion can be heard on Another Story High, a six-track mini album that suggests ME are one of the most exciting new rock bands to appear this side of the millennium. “We use drum troupes and orchestras, we love classical music and theatre and showmanship and we like to go places no one has been to before”, explains front man Luke. Or, as Kerrang! concluded: “enough deliciously OTT anthems to suggest the big time may soon be their real life not just fantasy.” You can’t say fairer than that.
"The Aussie outfit look set to make a big splash. Drawing equally from the rock histrionics of Muse and the bombastic, operatic pop of Queen, they sound huge, dramatic and unutterably exciting" - Kerrang.

Full English Breakfast release a terrific follow up to their eponymous debut

'A highly eccentric but thoroughly engaging electronic/art-pop debut that aligns him with the Fall, Denim and Frank Zappa.’ Uncut.

Full English Breakfast release Candy In Weightlessness on Scratchy Records on 6th August 2012.
Full English Breakfast is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Alvin Spetz. The band’s eponymous debut album released in 2009 garnered many plaudits including the Guardian which called it “genuinely esoteric and obscure, it would have made a superb addition to Rough Trade's late-70s roster’ and the Sunday Times which suggested it was “seriously good” and pulled together “the sound of the Fall, Edwyn Collins, Devo and Wire.” Commercial success, of course, did not beckon but then again neither did ignominy and a fall from grace. And were Throbbing Gristle and The Residents on Top Of The Pops every week? I think not.
With acute serendipity this brings us to Candy In Weightlessness a follow up album that’s every bit as good as its predecessor - and then some. Naturally, Full English Breakfast were conceived and born outside gravity anyway – like a celestial Fletcher Christian – so it is a logical progression that they should now produce the kind of music capable of existing independently of those who accidentally encounter it. What we mean to say is – if a Full English Breakfast song is playing on your stereo and there is no one there to hear it, how can we be sure it actually exists? Or as Bertrand Russell might contrive:
There once was a man who said, “God,
Must think it exceedingly odd
If he finds that this tree
Continues to be
When there’s no one about in the Quad.”
Dear Sir, Your astonishment’s odd:
I am always about in the Quad.
And that’s why the tree
Will continue to be,
Since observed by, Yours faithfully, God.”

Inspired somewhat alarmingly by the sweets that were given to astronauts before they embarked on their trip on the Space Shuttle Atlantis last year, Candy In Weightlessness inhabits the unholy territory between screaming and laughing as well as Public Image Limited, New Music, Air, David Arnold and Psychic TV: Ice 9 is a paean to Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle; Bubbleworks could be Killing Joke if it wasn’t so fiendishly clever; and the bleakly ironic Second Hand Poet is no more or less than the sound of a demented Stepford Wife spouting bilious poetry. It’s Ken Clarke sings the Associates, it’s Henry Kissinger sings Joy Division, it’s like nothing you’ve heard before or since.

The full track listing runs as follows: Bubbleworks, Second Hand Poet, Open Your Mind, 3 Before A, Ivor’s Noodles, Bedrooms, Music For Shops, Ice 9, Thought Bubbles.
Alvin Spetz discovered music at Aberdeen University and recorded several demos with Keith and Derek McKenzie, founding members of the Shamen. Inspiration came by way of Edwyn Collins, The Fall, Josef K and The Pop Group. With Candy In Weightlessness he has finally achieved re-entry .

HUE AND CRY LONDON SHOW - SATURDAY MAY 26TH

Scottish hip funkateers Hue and Cry have announced they'll be performing a special full band show at the O2 Academy in Islington, London on Saturday, 26th May. The band whose new album Hot Wire - the first new album from brothers Pat and Greg Kane since 2008’s Open Soul - is out now, will be performing much of their celebrated back catalogue as well as an introductory selection of songs from the new record. Hot Wire itself combines a love of Steely Dan and the solo work of Becker and Fagan with a sprawling template that includes songs reminiscent of Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone and early New Orlean’s inspired funk.

Specifically for the London show, Hue and Cry have announced a unique platinum pass package which will include a souvenir brochure plus a laminated pass and lanyard which provides additional access to a VIP Reception (which will include complimentary champagne on arrival at the venue),the band's sound-check as well as a Meet & Greet with Pat and Greg Kane, an exclusive intimate piano & vocal acoustic set from the brothers together with complimentary pre-show hospitality.

As Scottish as crude oil and football management excellence, Hue and Cry first leapt to prominence in 1987 when their single Labour Of Love (lifted from that year’s Seduced and Abandoned album) hit the No.6 slot. The immensely successful album Remote and further hit singles Violently and Looking For Linda followed before the Top Ten album Stars Crash Down and the release of Open Soul in 2008 further showcased the band’s classic pop-soul sound this time with a stripped down production. The release of Hot Wire firmly cements their position as loveably intellectual soul-pop pioneers.

STEVE JENKINS - THE FUTURE IS IN THE HISTORY; Britney, Justin and the truth about the music industry - JIVE RECORDS MD STEVE JENKINS publishes his autobiography

There have been so many kiss and tell memoirs about the music business it is refreshing to stumble across an honest autobiography that neglects this artifice and simply focuses on what really goes on behind the scenes in the record industry. Steve Jenkins – The Future Is In The History does exactly that, charting the rise of an obsessive music fan from Walsall who starts out as a club DJ before becoming a regional sales record plugger and finally finding himself running the most successful independent record label in the world.
That label was Jive Records whose artists included Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys, R Kelly, Nsync, Steps and Justin Timberlake but a list of artists Jenkins has represented or promoted reads like a who’s who of popular culture: Elton John, George Michael, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Tom Jones, The Stone Roses, David Bowie, Genesis, Hall & Oates. Frankie Goes To Hollywood. The list is endless and many owe their stellar status to his brilliance.

Jenkins' own position in pop culture is secure: from a very young age to the present day he has been involved in every aspect of the music business from club dj, to record shop assistant and from radio plugging to sales promotion. This has given him a unique insight into how the music business operates and specifically how it can be manipulated to achieve huge commercial success. Jenkins' promotion company Impulse was the first to realize that Gallup only placed their chart return machines in certain shops and to target those shops accordingly. Jenkins also pioneered innovative promotion techniques such as having his artists meet all the staff at Woolworths head office and selling his artist’s singles for £1.99 in its first week of release: this latter technique ensured Britney Spears “Baby One More Time” sold 250,000 copies in the first three days of release, half a million records in its first week, subsequently topping sixty charts worldwide and staying in the UK charts for an astonishing 82 weeks. Naturally it was the world’s best selling single in 1999, the year that Jive out-majored the majors.

The Future Is In The History is very much the compelling life story of a genuine recording industry pioneer. Jenkins has almost certainly been responsible for more hit records than anyone else in history - 260 gold and platinum discs and counting. So what’s the connection between Esther Rantzen, Britney Spears, John Major and Kylie Minogue? Steve Jenkins - the music industry's best kept secret and a true maverick in every sense of the word. Prepare to be amazed.

DR ROBERT RELEASES TWO ALBUMS ON APRIL 23RD

Dr Robert, singer songwriter from The Blow Monkeys is to release not one but two Internet only albums on April 23rd.

‘Flutes and Bones’ is a brand new solo album from Robert.

“Flutes” has been an ongoing project for me for the last eight years or so… every time I got round to finishing it something else came up… a new Blow Monkeys album or an album of duets I did with PP Arnold. Finally its the right time. It’s very much a home-grown project...Its probably the most unique thing I’ve ever done. its basically my impressions of moving to a new country, Spain, with my young family and living in a small mountain community with no electricity and building our own house from scratch… the generosity of the people and shimmering luminous light’

Additionally Robert is releasing an exclusive ‘Dr Robert sings The Blow Monkeys Acoustic' album with brand new stripped down and intimate versions of world famous Blow Monkey songs like ‘Digging Your Scene' and 'It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way'

In a musical journey that has already lasted thirty years and includes collaborations with such luminaries as Curtis Mayfield, Paul Weller, Cheb Khaled and Kym Mazelle to name but a few. Robert shows no sign of slowing down… Indeed “Flutes and Bones” shows every sign of being a career highlight.

The album is exclusively available from the official Dr Robert & The Blow Monkeys facebook page
The single, Coldheart, can be downloaded free here

THE RED BULLETS - WALKING SOLO APRIL 23RD

The Red Bullets release their new single Walking Solo on Bullet Records via Absolute on April 23rd 2012. The track is about ending a relationship only to find out it’s been ended for you and it’s a sterling example of the band’s fashionable Elton John meets The Feeling melodrama. Other tracks on the band’s fantastic debut album Drama In The Drawing Room are reminiscent of mid-70s era Steve Miller, Billy Joel and even Supertramp.

Walking Solo was written by Pete Edwards and produced by Gavin Monaghan. The band’s debut album Drama In The Drawing Room is due for release in May 2012.

“Let’s go our own way now, but you did it today”

Full details can be found on www.theredbullets.com

The Red Bullets - Upstairs at The Garage, Highbury, North London on Thu 29th March.

Is it possible to sound like The Feeling and Billy Joel in 2012? Yes it is! The Red Bullets play The Garage in Highbury, North London on Thursday 29th March. On stage at 8pm.

Consider the name: The Red Bullets. Just what were you expecting? Heavy metal? I don’t think so. Imagine, if you will, a sound reminiscent of Elton John fronting The Feeling and a band who owe as much to the fashionable melodrama of mid-70s era Steve Miller and Billy Joel as they do to… well, Supertramp! The band’s debut single East Of Easy (released on Bullet Records via Absolute in March 2012) is as close to a mission statement as you could get: “East of easy, south of simple, west of where I wanna be/We all know the north is way too cold/Meet me in the middle, meet me in the middle/We can have a little paradise of our very own.”

The Red Bullets comprise brothers Pete Edwards (piano, lead vocals) and Mark Edwards (drums, backing vocals) and they formed in Buckingham in 2007. Live and variously on record the band also include former Twang insider Stuart Hartland on guitar and lyricist John Bailey on bass. The latter, along with Pete, is responsible for much of the lyrical content on Drama In The Drawing Room, the band’s debut album due for release later this year, and the writing relationship that Pete and John share is as fluid and engaging as anything this decade will produce. Correspondingly, Drama In The Drawing Room is a revelation: fresh and uncontrived, it has that instant classic feel like something you’ve had knocking around the house for years. It’s the sound of someone hitting the ground running.

The Red Bullets release Drama In The Drawing Room on Bullet Records via Absolute on 7th May 2012.

The Stranglers release Giants on Coursegood Records on March 5th 2012

The world’s most dangerously eccentric band The Stranglers, release their new album Giants on March 5th 2012. Unfortunately, the artwork for Giants which features all four members of the band being hung from the neck on a child’s swing (whilst a child looks on) has generated some controversy and a series of advertisements planned to run in the London Underground were not able to do so as they were considered to be unsuitable. The ads were deemed to be problematic under the UK Code of non-broadcast advertising and likely to generate a large number of complaints. For their part, the Stranglers have reiterated that the artwork is intended as a barbed comment on the lynch-mob mentality of the media. However, it can also be seen as a literal interpretation of the album’s title track which questions whether the world is still capable of producing “giants” anymore. No More Heroes indeed.

Interestingly, in the first ever post watershed use of Outdoor media in Britain, the advertisement can be seen at twenty locations around London on digital screens every minute between 9pm and 5am from this Saturday March 3rd.

Praise for the 'Giants':

“Close to vintage”  UNCUT magazine

“The Stranglers have never sounded so alive.”  4/5 MOJO

“Enough of the old menace to satisfy the faithful.”  Q magazine

“Never have they sounded so urgent. Never have they sounded so dark, never have they sounded so philosophical, melodic, snarling and triumphant.”  9/10 Vive Le Rock!

The Stranglers are currently on a nationwide tour of the UK.:

ME at HMV Next BIg Thing .....

Fresh off their Panic At The Disco tour dates, the imMEnse-sounding ME will be appearing at the HMV Next Big Thing showcase (on stage 8.30 pm) this Friday February 10th. The band will be releasing their mini-album Another Story High on Lizard King Records on March 5th 2012.

Two of ME - or should that be us? - met at a spiritualist nudist festival so it’s hardly surprising that the debut single by ME should be called Naked. Naked is mini rock opera on the grandest of scales and a song that asks whether life, the universe and everything must always be like this. The band cite The Beatles, The Mars Volta and Led Zeppelin as influences but if we threw Danny Elfman, Philip Glass, Rachmaninof and Queen in there you’d start to get scared – so we won’t. Instead we’ll just suggest that ME are one of the most exciting new rock bands to appear this side of the millennium.

ME are Luke Ferris (voice, guitar, piano), Damian Tapley (guitar, voice), Michael Godde (bass, voice) and Spike Rogers (drums, programming). They formed in 2009 in Melbourne, the epicentre of the Australian music scene and a place the band describe as “an outburst of happiness that no one wants to leave!” And why ME? “Because it’s faintly absurd and un-googlable” they suggest and it’s true that there’s something intangible about both the name and the band. “We use drum troupes and orchestras, we love classical music and theatre and showmanship and we like to go places no one has been to before”, explains lead singer Luke.

ME have just completed work on their debut album produced by the legendary Simon ‘Barny’ Barnicott (Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys, Temper Trap.)

“Wake up – our dreams are so much harder than yours.”

"One World ..One John" - a new film documenting the career of John Martyn

“One World …One John” is the title of a new film by Lyn and Eleanor McMullan due to be released on DVD on Liason Music (LSM 4014) on April 2nd 2012. The film documents the career of the legendary guitarist and singer John Martyn who the Sunday Times described recently as "an electrifying guitarist and singer whose music blurred the boundaries between folk, jazz, rock and blues". Martyn, who’s magic and genius could be said to have been spread over four decades, was filmed between 1999 and 2001 in Scotland and Ireland and the film captures John and his band at was has been arguably called the height of his performance career.

Originally One World ..One John surfaced on VHS in 2001 as 'Tell Them I'm Somebody Else' but after John's death from pneumonia at the age of 60 in 2009, both the film-makers and John’s estate wanted to create a lasting tribute to John from the amazing amount of unseen and moving footage they had filmed over the years. Subsequently they completely re-edited the original film, replacing half of the material with new unseen footage. The new film includes fifteen performances by John Martyn and his band plus rare unseen performance, interview and rehearsal footage.

Last year saw the release of two critically acclaimed John Martyn releases, Heaven and Earth, the record he completed just before he died, and Johnny Boy Would Love This – A Tribute To John Martyn, an album comprising thirty cover versions of Martyn’s songs recorded by artists such as Beck, Phil Collins, Snow Patrol, David Gray, Paolo Nutini, Morcheeba, Beth Orton and The Cure’s Robert Smith. Phil Collins commented at the time: “John Martyn was completely unique. He had such power, such emotion in his music that he could overwhelm the listener even when it was just him and an acoustic guitar.” Robert Smith concurred suggesting that “Martyn’s beautiful songs were, are and always will be an inspiration and an enchantment.”

The immensely successful album Remote and further hit singles Violently and Looking For Linda followed before the Top Ten album Stars Crash Down and the release of Open Soul in 2008 further showcased the band’s classic pop-soul sound. The release of Hot Wire firmly cements their position as loveably intellectual hip funkateers.

Hue and Cry area also set to perform at the Hot Wire Weekend on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st March at Glasgow’s 02 ABC, the first of these dates featuring the brothers in an intimate piano and vocal performance, whilst the second date sees the pair lining up as part of their full seven piece band. EAST 17 release Dark Light on FOD Records

Dark Light refers to the colour seen by the eye in perfect darkness. By some strange coincidence it also happens to be the title of the new album by East 17, their first since 1999. The album showcases the band’s new transatlantic rock sound reminiscent of bands like Kings Of Leon and U2 and even artists like Brian Adams and Billy Joel. It’s a brave move and one that’s paid off on a record that’s as catchy as Summer of ’69and as soft rock and big sounding as it gets. As main-man Tony Mortimer suggests “I think everyone is subconsciously inspired by American music and rock ‘n’ roll and this time around we wanted to do something more live with less tricks.” The album has been produced by Bob Rose and Tony Mortimer.

The track-listing for Dark Light runs like this: I Can’t Get You Off My Mind (Crazy), Crazy Fool, Nightlife, Counting Clouds, Break Ur Heart, Friday Night, Kiss Of Winter, Broken Valentine, Where Does Love Go, You Must Be An Angel.

Themes on Dark Light include love, everyday life and relationships: Counting Clouds is an intensely personal song about Mortimer’s wife preparing to go into hospital to have a spinal operation; Crazy Fool is about not being able to express how you feel in a relationship; andBroken Valentine is about a guy who is attracted to a woman who is completely out of his depth. Additionally, Coldwell provides two numbers: the gospel-tinged You Must Be An Angel, a song about a girl who completely changes a man’s life around and Nightlife, a song that describes the perfect East 17 night on the town (clue: it ain’t pretty!) Finally, to firmly cement their place on the naughty step, lead track Can’t Get You Off My Mind (Crazy) is about an insanely debauched after-show party.

East 17 are still one of the most celebrated and successful boy bands of all time - having achieved 18 Top Twenty hits (including House Of Love, Deep and Christmas No.1 Stay Another Day) as well as four Top Ten albums and sales of over twenty million records The band were recently re-united under the auspices of principal songwriter Tony Mortimer who won an Ivor Novello Songwriter Award for Stay Another Day, the song he wrote for his brother Ollie who committed suicide. The current line-up includes original members Tony Mortimer, John Hendy and Terry Caldwell.

Dark Light will be released on FOD Records.

THE RED BULLETS - EAST OF EASY - MARCH 12TH 2012

Consider the name: The Red Bullets. Just what were you expecting? Heavy metal? I don’t think so. Imagine, if you will, a sound reminiscent of Elton John fronting The Feeling and a band who owe as much to the fashionable melodrama of mid-70s era Steve Miller and Billy Joel as they do to… well, Supertramp! The band were formed in Buckingham in 2007 by brothers Pete and Mark Edwards and often perform as a four-piece featuring Pete on piano and lead vocals, Mark on drums and backing vocals, former Twang insider Stuart Hartland on guitar as well as lyricist and bass player John Bailey.

The Red Bullets release their debut single East Of Easy on Bullet Records via Absolute on March 12th 2012. The song - which is about trying to reconcile an ailing relationship - was co-written by BMI Award winning songwriter and Ivor Novello/Brit Award nominee Jamie Hartman whose previous cohorts include Joss Stone, Will Young and The Wanted amongst others. The track also features George Michael’s guitarist, Graham Kearns, strings arranged by composer Nigel Hopkins and production by Chris Porter.

The Red Bullets’ debut album Drama In The Drawing Room is due for release in May 2012. The band are already receiving significant airplay and are currently lining up a nationwide tour. In the meantime they will be appearing live on the following dates:

15th February - London - Dublin Castle
25th Feb – Wavenden - The Stables Theatre
31st March – Kingsbridge – Coast.

MAMAS GUN RELEASE ‘ONLY ONE’ (FEATURING BEVERLEY KNIGHT) AND PLAY JAZZ CAFE ON JANUARY 20TH 2012

MAMAS GUN are set to release a new single in January 2012. Entitled Only One, the track features Beverley Knight and deals with the subject of ‘soul mates’ and fateful love. It’s been lifted from the band’s second album The Life & Soul released in July 2011.
In 2010 Beverley Knight invited Mamas Gun on tour with her, having previously declared their music to be “something very special”. She has since explained further; “I heard their material and thought ‘this is so brilliant” because obviously the nucleus of the sound is soul but like me it’s got the funk in there and a bit of a rock edge; it had all the elements.”
The writing of Only One itself followed the 2010 tour and was a natural process between both writers, a perfect collaboration between artists who combine classic soul sounds together with a hybrid of several disparate music genres. Additionally, both artists are developing reputations as being amongst the UK’s strongest and most exciting live performers, the energy of which is also reflected in this song.

The Life & Soul (and indeed Only One) was produced by Grammy Award winning production team Martin Terefe and Andreas Olsson (named in the Top Ten best pop producers by Billboard this year and noted for success with artists such as Jason Mraz, Train, James Morrison, KT Tunstall and Jamie Cullum) and is the follow up to the band's debut Routes To Riches, a record that Billboard described as "a kaleidoscope of a record that travels through genres." The album was received well by media worldwide and made a huge impact in Japan where Mamas Gun were heralded as the most played international act in the country.

‘”On The Life & Soul the band have settled more firmly on one sound...to create something more powerful...and highly listenable” The Sunday Times.

Mamas Gun headline The Jazz Cafe in Camden on January 20th 2012.

Michael Nyman releases "MICHAEL NYMAN" on January 23rd 2012

The year 1981 saw the release of Michael Nyman, the first Michael Nyman Band album, a groundbreaking record that presented Nyman’s unique take on minimalism and experimental music and unexpectedly threw in jazz improvisation for good measure. The album has only ever been available on the rarest of long-since deleted vinyl but will be re-released on MN Records on 23rd January as a 30th anniversary retro-look black vinyl CD with a booklet and limited edition poster in a replica gatefold LP-style sleeve.

Michael Nyman was produced by Nyman’s ex-Maidstone Art School student, David Cunningham, who had just founded the Flying Lizards and who went on to produce every Michael Nyman recording for the following ten years. The most significant production is that of ‘M-Work’, the reduced-scale score for Nyman’s collaboration with Bruce McLean and Paul Richards’ performance work ‘The Masterwork/Award-Winning Fish-knife’ of 1979. Much of the remaining music on Michael Nyman is taken from soundtracks for pre-‘Draughtsman’s Contract’ films by Peter Greenaway: such as “Bird Anthem” (from Act Of God, 1981, a documentary about people struck by lightning), "Bird List Song" [from the 3-hour long The Falls, 1979] and “Five Orchestral Pieces, Opus Tree” (from The Tree, 1978). It also includes Nyman’s classic deconstruction of the first 16 bars of the ‘Catalogue Song’ from Mozart’s ‘Don Giovanni’, "In Re Don Giovanni" which was also released at the time as a single on Les Disques du Crepuscule. The most unexpected track on Michael Nyman, however, is the melodically naïve “Waltz in F”, a piece Nyman wrote for art students whilst teaching at Trent Polytechnic in 1977, and which he subsequently commanded two modern jazz improvisers, Evan Parker and Peter Brotzmann, to “destroy” by overdubbing around ten separate tracks which Nyman and Cunningham added in to the Waltz mix.

Michael Nyman is significant for other reasons: as the first Michael Nyman album it represents the ‘crossing point’ between the Campiello Band [the onstage band which Nyman founded to play his arrangements of Venetian gondoliers’ songs in the opening production at the Olivier Theatre in October 1976], with its unique mix of folk, Renaissance and modern instruments and the purely modern instrumentation of the current Michael Nyman Band. And Bird Work is used as the music for the closing sequences of both Man with a Movie Camera and NYman with a Movie Camera and Bird List Song is the model for Nose-List Song and various ‘list songs’ in the new collaboration with Robert Pacitti, On Landguard Point which world premiered, sung by Marie Angel in Felixstowe on 23 September 2011.

Michael Nyman will be released on MN Records on January 23rd 2012.

EAST 17 release their new single Can’t Get You Off My Mind (Crazy) on FOD Records in February 2012

East 17 are set to unveil the first fruits of their radical new sound in Spring 2012. The band who are still one of the most celebrated and successful boy bands of all time - having achieved 18 Top Twenty hits (including House Of Love, Deep and Christmas No.1 Stay Another Day) as well as four Top Ten albums and sales of over twenty million records – have replaced a previous dance ethic with a transatlantic rock backdrop reminiscent of artists like Billy Idol, Kings Of Leon, U2 and Bon Jovi. Main-man Tony Mortimer suggests “I think everyone is subconsciously inspired by American music and rock ‘n’ roll and this time around we wanted to do something more live with less tricks!”

Can’t Get You Off My Mind (Crazy) is about a gorgeous girl you notice at a hotel where an insanely debauched after-show party is under way. It’s as catchy as hell (think Summer of ’69!) and produced by Tony Mortimer and Bob Rose whilst the video was shot in Rome by legendary video director Lorenzo Vignolo. The band have just completed work on their first new album for over twelve years, a record entitled Dark Light mooted for release on FOD Records in March 2012.

East 17 were recently re-united under the auspices of principal songwriter Tony Mortimer who won an Ivor Novello Songwriter Award for Stay Another Day, the song he wrote for his brother Ollie who committed suicide. The current line-up includes original members Mortimer, John Hendy and Terry Caldwell.

Hue and Cry release Hot Wire on Blairhill Records (BLAIR7P) April 2nd 2012

Record unemployment, the rise and rise of left-wing comedy and a flailing British government, yes, it can only mean one thing – the return of Scottish hip-funkateers Hue and Cry. And indeed April 2nd 2012 heralds the release of Hot Wire, the first new album from brothers Pat and Greg Kane since 2008’s Open Soul. Hot Wire combines a love of Steely Dan and the solo work of Becker and Fagan with a sprawling template that includes songs reminiscent of Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone and early New Orlean’s inspired funk. The full track listing for Hot Wire looks like this:

Duty To The Debtor, Little Man, Hand And Heart, Fail You Better, If You Want Changes, Summer Head/Daze, Carlos Takes The Fall, I Can Have It All, Irreversible Situation, Darkness Falls.

As Scottish as crude oil and football management excellence, Hue and Cry first leapt to prominence in 1987 when their single Labour Of Love (lifted from that year’s Seduced and Abandoned album) hit the No.6 slot. The immensely successful album Remote and further hit singles Violently and Looking For Linda followed before Hue and Cry cemented their position as loveably intellectual soul-pop pioneers with the Top Ten album Stars Crash Down. The release of Open Soul in 2008 further showcased the band’s classic pop-soul sound this time with a stripped down production.

Hue and Cry are set to perform at the Hot Wire Weekend on Friday 30th and Saturday 31st March at Glasgow’s 02 ABC, the first of these dates featuring the brothers in an intimate piano and vocal performance, whilst the second date sees the pair lining up as part of their full seven piece band. The weekend is set to include a host of amazing extras and a few surprises.

BOTHAM’S ASHES, CHARLES AND DI’S WEDDING AND THE RELEASE OF "MICHAEL NYMAN" ....

The year 1981 saw the release of Michael Nyman , the first Michael Nyman Band album, a groundbreaking record that presented Nyman’s unique take on minimalism and experimental music and unexpectedly threw in jazz improvisation for good measure. The album has only ever been available on the rarest of long-since deleted vinyl but will be re-released on MN Records on 5th December as a 30th anniversary retro-look black vinyl CD with a booklet and limited edition poster in a replica gatefold LP-style sleeve.

Michael Nyman was produced by Nyman’s ex-Maidstone Art School student, David Cunningham, who had just founded the Flying Lizards and who went on to produce every Michael Nyman recording for the following ten years. The most significant production is that of ’M-Work’, the reduced-scale score for Nyman’s collaboration with Bruce McLean and Paul Richards’ performance work ’The Masterwork/Award-Winning Fish-knife’ of 1979. Much of the remaining music on Michael Nyman is taken from soundtracks for pre-’Draughtsman’s Contract’ films by Peter Greenaway: such as Bird Anthem (from Act Of God, 1981, a documentary about people struck by lightning), "Bird List Song" [from the 3-hour long The Falls, 1979] and Five Orchestral Pieces, Opus Tree (from The Tree, 1978). It also includes Nyman’s classic deconstruction of the first 16 bars of the ’Catalogue Song’ from Mozart’s ’Don Giovanni’, "In Re Don Giovanni" which was also released at the time as a single on Les Disques du Crepuscule. The most unexpected track on Michael Nyman, however, is the melodically na?ve Waltz in F , a piece Nyman wrote for art students whilst teaching at Trent Polytechnic in 1977, and which he subsequently commanded two modern jazz improvisers, Evan Parker and Peter Brotzmann, to destroy by overdubbing around ten separate tracks which Nyman and Cunningham added in to the Waltz mix.

Michael Nyman is significant for other reasons: as the first Michael Nyman album it represents the ’crossing point’ between the Campiello Band [the onstage band which Nyman founded to play his arrangements of Venetian gondoliers’ songs in the opening production at the Olivier Theatre in October 1976], with its unique mix of folk, Renaissance and modern instruments and the purely modern instrumentation of the current Michael Nyman Band. And Bird Work is used as the music for the closing sequences of both Man with a Movie Camera and NYman with a Movie Camera and Bird List Song is the model for Nose-List Song and various ’list songs’ in the new collaboration with Robert Pacitti, On Landguard Point which world premiered, sung by Marie Angel in Felixstowe on 23 September 2011.

Michael Nyman will be released on MN Records on December 5th 2011.

CHRIS REA

Chris Rea releases the elaborate 3CD & 2DVD set, Santo Spirito, on September 5th 2011. The release includes a new studio album featuring Dancing My Blues Away, Never Tie Me Down, The Chance Of Love, Rock & Roll Tonight, Electric Guitar and The Last Open Road plus two bespoke feature films on DVD, written and directed by Rea.

Santo Spirito is the natural successor to The Blue Guitars project (which contained 11 CDs && 1DVD), a project that was considered pure, incomprehensible madness by record companies - until Chris produced the entire package himself and saw the release gross £5 million at retail. Chris told the BBC News last year "I cannot be bothered just making a CD any more. It has got to be something more interesting for me than just 10 tracks on CD."

Santo Spirito will be released by Rhino UK, a division of Warner Music, on Monday September 5th on CD/DVD only and will not be available for digital download until December 2011. The release offers exceptional value for money since it retails for less than £15.00. This enhanced collection includes Rea’s new 12-track studio album plus two exclusive feature films on DVD and the accompanying soundtracks for both movies on 2 separate CDs.

THE NORTH SEA SCROLLS

An evening of revelations by Luke Haines and Cathal Coughlan
With footnotes by Andrew Mueller
And accompaniment by Audrey Riley
August 22nd and 23rd, Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh, £12.50

The North Sea Scrolls have long been a bone of contention amongst historians, theologians and people shouting at bins in car parks. The Scrolls are believed, in certain quarters, to record a parallel, semi-hidden history of these islands. Now, a triumvirate of unlikely questers has at last pinned down the full story of these legendary documents. They are; Luke Haines, who has recorded as The Auteurs, Baader Meinhof, Black Box Recorder and solo; Cathal Coughlan, who has recorded as Microdisney, Fatima Mansions, Bubonique and solo; Andrew Mueller, journalist and author.

This dauntless trio are now ready to share the terrible knowledge they have disinterred. In song.

The parchments reached the hands of messrs Haines, Coughlan and Mueller by means which need not trouble us, and have been meticulously distilled and tactfully rewritten into fourteen new songs by Mr Haines and Mr Coughlan, to be performed on guitar and piano, and accompanied by the cello stylings of Audrey Riley. The songs will be linked by explanatory footnotes read by Mr Mueller.

The truths contained in the scrolls are at once profoundly disturbing and peculiarly reassuring. Certainly, they answer many long-pressing questions. How did a Dublin criminal overlord become an imperial viceroy? Is England really just two counties Northshire and Southshire? Could it be that the guttering violence of Northern Ireland is caused by terrorist tribute acts from Australia? Who is Tony Allen? How did Tim Hardin end up commanding a nationalist militia in Cornwall? Can it be true that Morris Men, far from the prancing buffoons of popular repute, are murderous vigilantes a Cotswoldian thugee cult? Was Chris Evans really burnt at the stake? If not, why not? Is Jim Corr actually right about everything?

The musical and spoken word section of the show will be followed by a Q&A session with Mr Haines and Mr Coughlan, hosted by Mr Mueller.
